Avant toute chose, et ne sachant pas si votre tournée U.S. avec Swarm of the Lotus,Yakuza et Misery Index a commencé, comment s’est-elle passée, ou comment se passe-t-elle ? Quelles sont les réactions du public par rapport aux nouvelles chansons ?

Salut, nous venons tout juste de commencer la tournée avec Misery Index,enfin seulement un concert jusqu’ici (interview réalisée le 5 novembre) mais les réactions du public ont été plus que positives, du moins pour ceux qui sont spécialement venus nous voir. Nous avons vraiment hâte de continuer cette tournée et de rencontrer Yakuza. Swarm of the Lotus a malheureusement annulé .

J’ai vraiment fortement apprécié votre album et il me paraît pour le moins difficile de décrire votre musique à une personne qui ne vous connaît pas ? Comment le ferais-tu ?

Tu devrais savoir qu’il ne faut jamais demander un musicien de décrire sa musique ! Je dis la plupart du temps que nous faisons du métal progressif, mais la plupart des gens associent ce courant avec Dream Theater alors …
Il faut juste écouter notre album !

Quelles ont été les réactions du public et de la presse suite à la parution de votre E.P. Null ?

Les remarques de la presse sur ce E.P. ont vraiment été positives et nous ont encouragé à prolonger cette expérience sur le long terme. Nous étions confiants par rapport aux morceaux que nous écrivions, mais quand vous recevez pas mal de compliments, on se sent récompensés et renforcés dans notre méthode de travail.

Quelles sont vos principales influences ?

A en juger par ce que nous écoutons dans le van lorsque nous tournons, très peu de métal, à part certains vieux classiques. Surtout du jazz, du vieux rock progressif, … Ces styles de musique sont devenus extrêmes pour nous vu que nous étions habitués par le passé à écouter de la musique vraiment agressive.

Est-ce que vous connaissez des groupes comme Alchemist, The Ocean ou même Gojira ?

J’ai écouté le dernier Gojira et je l’ai trouvé vraiment bien, surtout la prod’, un des meilleurs sons metal qu’il m’ait été donné d’entendre. J’ai écouté The Ocean, et si je m’en souviens bien, j’avais accroché, j’avais trouvé ça intéressant. Ils sont nombreux dans le groupe, non ? C’est sympa parce qu’aux States il y a un autre groupe qui s’appelle Ocean, ils font du doom vraiment excellent. Ils devraient faire quelque chose ensemble.

Ne crains-tu pas que ton groupe soit souvent associé à un groupe comme Mastodon, en France, la comparaison est quasi-systématique ?

Je déteste quand les gens écrivent sur toi comme ça et te rangent dans une catégorie bien définie, mais je pense que c’est juste un moyen de décrire aux gens notre son. Je suppose qu’il y a quelques éléments semblables, mais quiconque écoute attentivement les deux groupes est à même de remarquer d’importantes différences.

Pourquoi avez-vous décidé d’inclure un titre bonus sur la version européenne de Void ? Un moyen de conquérir l’Ancien Monde ?

En fait ce titre était sur l’E.P. (Ndlr. Cela m’apprendra à ne pas m’informer correctement), mais nous avions un peu de temps en sus au studio et nous avons décidé de le ré-enregistrer pour une éventuelle version européenne. En fait, l’E.P. est à considérer comme une démo, donc nous considérions que la prod’ était un peu faible par moments et nous voulions entendre à quoi ressemblerait ce titre s’il était sur-produit !

Quand pouvons-nous espérer vous voir en Europe ?

Avec un peu de chance, au début de l’année 2007 ! Lifeforce (le label) a vraiment envie que nous allions vous voir, ce que nous apprécions fortement ! J’ai assez hâte !

First of all, I don’t know if you’re still on tour when answering this mail, but how is it going on with the bands (Swarm of the Lotus, Yakuza or Misery Index) ? What are the reactions of the audience concerning the new songs ?

Hi ! Yeah, we are just starting the leg of this tour with Misery Index. We’ve only played one show so far, but the reaction was really positive from the people who came to see us. We’re really excited for the rest of this tour and to meet up with Yakuza. Swarm Of The Lotus broke up and won’t be joining up after all.

I really enjoyed your album, but it’s quite difficult for me to describe your music to people who don’t know you. How would you describe it ? The definition on your my-space page is quite vague …

You should know by now not to ask a musician to describe his own music ! I just usually tell people we play progressive metal, but too often people associate that with Dream Theater or something, which I’m not totally cool with. Just listen !

What were the reactions of the public and the press after the releasing of your E.P ‘Null’

The response from the press on that EP was really positive and encouraged us to really push ourselves on the full length. I think we all knew we were on to something when writing the EP songs, but when people hit you with that kind of praise it sort of validates all the work you put into it.

What are your main influences, quite different from your other (past ?) bands?

Yeah, well judging from what we listen to in the van on tour, we hardly listen to any metal anymore. Besides classics of course. Its mostly stuff like jazz, mellow/backbeat stuff, or old prog rock. Those forms of music have sort of become the new extreme for us since we’ve been listening to hard and heavy stuff for so long.

Do you know some bands like Alchemist or The Ocean, or even Gojira, a french band ?

I have heard the newest Gojira record, and I thought it was cool for sure. I was actually really into the production on that. Probably one of the best sounding metal records I’ve ever heard. The Ocean I have heard, and if I remember correctly, I think it was pretty interesting. They have a lot of members right ? Its funny because we have a band here in the US called Ocean, and they are really awesome doom stuff. The two bands should work something out !

Don’t you fear to be assimilated too often to a band like Mastodon ? At least in France, you’re always compared to them …

I pretty much hate it when people write you off and categorize you like that, but I guess its only fair to try and make that comparison to try and let people know what you sound like. I suppose there are similarities in our styles, but honestly anyone who listens to both us and them should be able to tell that there are lots and lots of differences.

Why did you record an extra-track just for Europe, a special gift to conquer the old world or something else ?

That song is actually from the EP, we had some extra time in the studio and decided to re-record it just in case of a European release, which ended up happening ! Basically, the EP was originally intended to just be a demo, so we felt the recording was lacking in some ways and just wanted to hear what that song would sound like if we totally overproduced it !

When can we expect to see you around in Europe ?

With any luck, we’ll be there in early 2007 ! The Lifeforce guys seem to really be making an effort to get us out there, which we really appreciate. Can’t wait for that !
